Detailed Description

Product Overview of Automatic Pressure-Relief Outlets for Gas Fire Suppression System Protection Zones

1. Overview

An increasing number of critical facilities are employing gaseous fire suppression systems for protection. To ensure successful extinguishment, the protected area of such systems must remain airtight during the discharge of the extinguishing agent, while also maintaining the integrity of its doors, windows, and structural components.

Our company’s mechanical pressure‑relief devices, also known as automatic venting ports, are installed on the walls of fire‑suppression protected zones. In normal operation, they remain closed; when the gaseous fire‑extinguishing system activates to suppress a fire in the zone, the device automatically opens at a specified pressure to vent excess pressure, thereby ensuring the safety of the protected area. Once the pressure drops to a predetermined level, the device automatically closes.

Our company’s pressure-relief devices ensure the airtightness of the protected area, meet the requirements for fire suppression, and simultaneously safeguard the safety of the protected zone.

2.3 Principle of Operation

When a fire occurs, the gaseous fire suppression system activates, discharging the extinguishing agent to suppress the fire, causing the pressure within the protected zone to rise. Once the pressure reaches the set threshold, the pressure-relief actuator rapidly switches the damper from the closed to the open position, releasing the pressure in the protected zone and preventing structural damage. When the pressure in the protected zone falls below the set value, the relief device resets, and the damper closes.

3. Installation and Construction

3.1 Selection

Selection of pressure relief devices: According to the fire suppression system design code, the area of the pressure relief openings in the protected zone can be calculated. Based on this calculated area, one or more pressure relief devices of appropriate model may be selected.

3.2 Installation

Code requirements: Pressure-relief devices should be installed on exterior walls; when used in a heptafluoropropane fire-extinguishing system, they shall be located at a height of at least two-thirds of the net height of the protected area.

Automatic Pressure-Relief Outlets for Gas Fire Suppression System Protection Zones | Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the function of an automatic pressure relief vent?

A1: During gas fire suppression, the pressure within the protected area rises sharply. The pressure relief vents automatically open to vent excess pressure, preventing deformation and damage to walls, doors, and windows caused by excessive pressure.

Q2: Which gaseous fire suppression systems are required to be equipped with automatic pressure relief vents?

A2: For enclosed protected zones of gaseous fire suppression systems such as heptafluoropropane, IG‑541, and carbon dioxide, pressure relief devices shall be installed in accordance with the relevant codes.

Q3: What are the installation requirements for pressure relief vents?

A3: Typically installed in the upper part of the protected area, close to the ceiling; the pressure relief direction should be oriented away from personnel passageways and equipment to prevent airflow impact.

Q4: Does the automatic pressure relief vent require a power supply?

A4: Mechanical pressure relief vents require no power supply and operate automatically by opening and closing in response to the pressure differential within the protected area; electric‑type units must be connected to the fire‑protection power supply and the alarm system.

Q5: How is the relief area of a pressure-relief vent determined?

A5: Calculated based on parameters such as the protected area’s volume, the type of extinguishing agent, and the discharge flow rate, it must comply with the gas fire‑extinguishing design code.

Q6: Is the pressure relief vent normally open or closed?

A6: Normally kept in a sealed, closed state to maintain the airtightness of the protected area; it automatically opens for pressure relief only when the internal pressure exceeds the set threshold.

Q7: Can ordinary blinds be used in place of an automatic pressure relief vent?

A7: No, it is not permissible. Conventional louvers cannot regulate the opening pressure and therefore cannot meet the requirements for pressure maintenance and overpressure relief in gas‑fire suppression protected zones.

Q8: After the pressure relief vent is installed, can the set opening pressure be adjusted independently?

A8: We do not recommend making on-site adjustments yourself. The operating pressure is factory‑calibrated; any necessary adjustments should be performed by qualified technical personnel.

Q9: Will the pressure relief vent affect the extinguishing concentration of the fire suppressant?

A9: The qualified product activates only when the pressure exceeds the set threshold; during normal fire‑extinguishing operations, it remains closed and does not affect the concentration of the extinguishing agent.

Q10: What routine maintenance checks should be performed?

A10: Regularly inspect the pressure-relief vent panel for deformation or jamming, ensure the seals are intact, and remove any surface debris to maintain smooth opening and closing.
